Martin Scorsese is a director who attaches exceptional importance to the music in his films, showing a particularly wide variety in his choice of composers, use of existing classical compositions or quoting pop and rock songs and work by classic American songwriters.
In addition to his musical films, he also carries on the great Hollywood tradition of symphonic film scores in other films, beginning with his one-time collaboration for Taxi Driver (1976) with the legendary Bernard Herrmann. Another great veteran among Hollywood composers, Elmer Bernstein, wrote the wonderful score for The Age of Innocence (1993) and the score for Bringing Out the Dead (1999). Meanwhile, Howard Shore established himself as Scorsese's regular composer, penning the scores for Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006) and Hugo (2011). The concert will also feature Scorsese's unique collaboration with Philip Glass for Kundun (1997), as well as Max Richter's “On the Nature of Light” from Shutter Island (2010).
In addition to this selection from the newly composed film scores, the concert also features some classic pieces Scorsese incorporates into his soundtracks: the Intermezzo from “Cavalleria Rusticana” by Pietro Mascagni in Raging Bull (1980) and the third symphony by Krzysztof Penderecki in Shutter Island.
