Ruben De Gheselle

The 30-year-old film composer Ruben De Gheselle, known for his intimate, hypnotic and sometimes dark scores, is active on various international productions including some recent titles such as the Cannes nominated - and Costa Rican entry for the Academy Awards - Clara Sola (dir. Nathalie Álvarez Mesén (2021), A Cops & Robbers Story (dir. Ilinca Calugareanu) (2020) which premiered at DOC NYC, the Tiong Bahru Social Club (dir. Bee Tiam Tan) (2020), nominated for the Golden Horses Awards and nominated in the Busan International Film Festival (2020) or the Canneseries winning Lockdown (prod. De Wereldvrede & Lecter Media) (2020). Ruben also worked on several internationally acclaimed short films including The Passerby (dir. Pieter Coudyzer) (2020), Beast! (dir. Pieter Coudyzer) (2016), Norman (dir. Robbe Vervaeke) (2014) and Elena (dir. Birute Sodeikate) (2021). Furthermore, many of these films and series aired on television networks including VRT, ARTE and RTBF.
In 2022, Ruben received the Grand Prix for best music in Music and Cinema Marseille and the national Belgian filmaward (Ensor) for discovery of the year. In 2021, Ruben received the prestigious Georges Delerue Award at the Film Fest Gent for the music of Clara Sola, following humbly in the footsteps of great artists such as Howard Shore, Astor Piazolla and Bruno Coulais. In 2020, the monthly Music Award of the Reale Film Festival was given to the score of The Passerby. In 2019, his composition Wildlands was named "Choice of Klara", Belgium's national radio station for Classical music. In 2017, he was selected as a Berlinale Talent. In 2016, he received the Award for Best Musical Creation at the world-renowned Annecy Film Festival for Beast!. In 2014, the award for Best Music in a European Short Film at the Angers International Film Festival and upon graduating from KASK & Conservatory he received the Emile-Mathieu Award.
Ruben is a teacher at KASK & Conservatory in the film music department. In addition, he is coordinator and classical music programmer at MIRY Concertzaal, programming concerts with ensembles such as Arditti Quartet, Graindelavoix, ICTUS and Huelgas Ensemble.
